SoftLayer Launches Next Generation of Industry’s First Open API

Dallas—March 3, 2008—SoftLayer launched its Application Protocol Interface (API) 3.0, an even more enhanced version of the industry’s first open source API.

API 3.0 provides system-to-system access to the more than 100 backend functions also available through SoftLayer’s proprietary, industry-leading Customer Portal. It can securely connect any system regardless of device or location—even mobile devices such as a RIM Blackberry or Apple iPhone—via SoftLayer’s innovative “network-within-a-network” private network topology. Its improvements over the previous generation include:

• Highly-integrated, object-oriented approach
• Greater .NET, Java, and Ruby on Rails compatibility
• Deeper integration with SoftLayer’s core Portal SOA design

As with SoftLayer’s earlier API versions, API 3.0 continues to be capable of using both SOAP and XML-RPC interfaces and, as an open, standards-based platform, can fully integrate with any thirdparty or custom application.

"It really leverages the open-source advantage," Mr. Day said. "Since releasing the first open API last summer, we’ve been overwhelmed by the customer and development network response. They have generated a lot of ideas and created countless custom control panels and client-side applications. We’ve incorporated their feedback into our roadmap and created a new version that will continue to fuel use and development."

SoftLayer API 3.0 is available at no cost to all SoftLayer customers. Anyone with a connection to the private network, either directly connected through their SoftLayer server or logged in remotely through a VPN, may use API-based applications.
