SoftLayer® Empowers Customers with Next Generation Intel® Xeon Processors
First to Offer Latest Technology to Customers Building Advanced Online Applications on a Global Cloud Infrastructure
Dallas—March 6, 2012—SoftLayer Technologies®, the innovation leader in on-demand cloud and dedicated hosting, today announced it will be the first hosting provider to offer servers featuring Xeon E5 2600 series processor. The E5-2600 series is based on Intel’s Sandy Bridge architecture and delivers more cores, memory support and I/O bandwidth making it ideal for powering cloud applications, virtualized computing and content streaming.
“We have always prided ourselves on making the most advanced technology available to our customers, and the Xeon E5 2600 series is no exception,” said Sam Fleitman, Chief Operations Officer for SoftLayer. “We are ensuring that the newest Sandy Bridge processors are publicly available on day one for our power-hungry customers, who are looking to create tomorrow’s leading Web applications and advanced online services.”
Key features and benefits of the new Xeon E52600-based servers include:
- Up to 80 percent performance boost over previous generation of Intel Xeon 5600 series processors;
- New Intel Integrated I/O with PCI Express 3.0 can up to triple the movement of data in to and out of the processor so information can be made available faster than ever to support data-hungry applications;
- Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) — a new, 256-bit instruction set extension to Intel SSE that accelerates floating point intensive applications and reduces compute times; and
- Hyper-threading technology that enables up to 16 computational threads.
"Once again SoftLayer demonstrates its ability to deliver leading technology to customers time-to-market by offering platforms with the new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 product family," said Jason Waxman, GM of Intel's Cloud Infrastructure Group, "Our latest Intel Xeon processor-based platforms deliver leading energy efficient performance, greater bandwidth and I/O, power management and built in security features that are ideal to meet cloud computing requirements."
“SoftLayer’s data center, cloud computing and hosting services are legendary in the industry and Supermicro is dedicated to our longstanding partnership as their premier provider of Data Center Optimized (DCO) computing platforms,” said Charles Liang, President and CEO of Supermicro. “With our extensive line of next-generation server solutions
supporting Intel processor E5-2600/1600 families, Supermicro’s new DCO solutions deliver the exceptional performance, scalability, efficiency and reliability that SoftLayer and their customers demand.”
The Sandy Bridge microarchitecture is a significant advance in processor integration and manufacturing. It unifies processor cores, memory controller, last-level cache (LLC), and graphics and media processing for new advantages including fast core access to shared data in last-level cache, higher memory bandwidth, and intelligent “performance to workload” matching.Pricing
List prices start at $400 for a single processor Intel Xeon E5 2600 server with 8 GB RAM and $500 for a dual processor server with 16 GB RAM per-month.
