SoftLayer Lowers Prices Across All Service Families

Changes deliver even more performance per dollar and increased price transparency

Dallas—Jun. 10, 2014

SoftLayer, an IBM Company today announced significant price reductions on a number of its cloud infrastructure services, lowering virtual server prices up to 5 percent and object storage up to 60 percent.

Today’s reductions are in addition to pricing and standard service changes that the company made February 24. Combined, SoftLayer has reduced pricing an average of 22 percent for bare metal servers, 51 percent for virtual servers, and up to 86 percent for RAM upgrades. The company also introduced a new, tiered RAM upgrade pricing model that lowers customers’ cost per gigabyte of RAM as they add more to their servers.

“We have always committed to providing customers the most performance per dollar and the clearest picture of their total cost of cloud,” said Francisco Romero, chief operating officer for SoftLayer. “We’re excited to deepen that advantage.”

Alongside the price changes, SoftLayer added even more value to what was the industry’s most comprehensive selection of services included for no additional cost with each bare metal or virtual server.

Bare metal servers now come with 20TB/month of outbound bandwidth and virtual servers with 5TB/month (additional bandwidth is available at a nominal charge).

Each server continues to come with unlimited inbound bandwidth, unlimited intra- and inter-data center bandwidth, and 24x7 support delivered via online chat or telephone, all at no additional charge.

“We don’t believe in price wars, because the cloud is not a commodity. There is a significant difference between what you get from one provider to the next,” Mr. Romero said. “We see it every day. Other providers might have lower starting prices, but then the customer has to pay an additional fee for bandwidth, storage, support, and they tend to be based on an oversubscribed or over segmented infrastructure model.

“In the end the total bill comes out much higher. Their customers end up paying far more than they would at SoftLayer to get a fraction of the performance, reliability, and capacity that their workload demands.”
